Drafted by the cowboys with the 53rd overall pick, Quincy Carter was the first rookie quarterback selected in the second round to start a week 1 game in the history of the NFL. Carter was the third rookie quarterback to open the season as a starter in Cowboys history.

In 2003 Quincy Carter led the Dallas Cowboys to a 10-6 record and the NFL playoffs. He became the fifth quarterback in franchise history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a season.
